When I was 7 years old at that time, i always watch my late grandmother wrapped banana leaf into triangular shape and she will then insert glutinous rice and tied 3 to 4 shapes of the leaves together with a rafia string. She will then boiled the triangular shaped banana leaves for hours inside this huge pot. When all the water evaporates, she will then take it all out and unwrap the banana leaf and the glutinious rice inside the leaves will formed up to be a perfect browned-greenish triangular shaped delight. But back then I wasnt quite sure how it tasted like, she will dress it up with coconut flakes and then pour this thick black liquid. At that time i thought it was soy sauce *_* and was heavily digusted, cos to me soy sauce is only meant to eat with rice and fried egg. and being 7 years old, (eat only macdonalds and KFC and koko krunch) eating kuih kuih wasnt really much of a favourite for me.She made those delights every once a week for wedding purposes. So after getting to know that black liquid was brown sugar and not soy sauce -_-, I decided to give it a taste. I remembered I was 10 years old the first time when i inserted a quarter piece of the glutinious rice with coconut flakes, dipped with brown sugar into my mouth, the brown sugar liquid droplets landed onto my tongue, the extreme sugar taste rushed into my bloodstream and alerted my brain, tellin me how nice the brown sugar tasted. As the whole piece went into my mouth, I began to chew. The tenderness of the glutinous rice was so perfect, that within few chews, it went down into my gullet (esophagus -_-). And from that day onwards, I began to appreciate this heavenly sent kuih until now. My mom inherited the art of the recipe from my late grandma, the taste is almost the same only that she doesnt make it occasionally.
As for now Im craving for that sweet tasting, chewable delight. The delight that is known as Kuih Lopez (i spelled it Lopez cos it seems funkier *_* by right its just Lopis)
I miss you kuih lopez, there are no such thing existed like you in camp =(.
